The Genus Heliophyllum (Anthozoa Rugosa) in the upper Middle Devonian (Givetian) - BAP #362

Specimens of the genus Heliophyllum are among the most common components of the upper Middle Devonian coral fauna (Givetian: Hamilton Group and Tully Limestone) in New York State. Although these corals are abundant and widespread, examination of large numbers of specimens indicates that most of them belong in a single, variable species. H. halli Milne-Edwards and Haime, including both solitary and colonial forms. This study has resulted in the recognition of four subspecies of H. halli, the solitary H. halli halli, and three colonial subspecies. H. halli confluens (Hall), H. halli bellonense n. subsp., and H. halli joshuense n. subsp. The three colonial subspecies occur in restricted stratigraphic positions, each in a coral bed in which it is associated and intergrades with solitary H. halli halli.
