Diplocaulus salamandroides
Carboniferous-Permian amphibian
Diplocaulus was a kind of amphibian called a lepospondyl. These were small carnivorous animals that often looked like eels or salamanders. Diplocaulus’ boomerang-shaped head probably helped them swim faster through the water. They lived from the Carboniferous until the end of the Permian Period, 306 to 255 million years ago.
