In these previously unpublished Memoirs, spanning more than 60 years, he relates dramatic accounts of his long and fascinating career, from Arctic fieldwork in the early 1930s, escaping Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, working in the American West and Australian outback, cooperating with Iranian, Pakistani, and Afghan colleagues in the days before terrorism, and the founding of international paleontological societies and the Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology. Born in East Prussia, Teichert worked and lived in all corners of the Earth. In addition to becoming a world authority on fossil cephalopods, he published on topics from Gondwanan geology to fossil reefs, and described more than 280 new species, from plants to crinoids to ichthyosaurs. This volume, combining the best of modern paleontology with the classic illustrations of James Hall, John Clarke, Amadeus Grabau, and Winifred Goldring, fills that need. The historical notes on early New York Devonian paleontologists are an interesting read and the section on facies — while short — gives useful background. An aspect that I particularly like is the brief summaries of diagnostic/typical features of each species; these are quite helpful for those who want to dig a bit more deeply into what makes taxa distinctive beyond the gestalt appearance. This is primarily because of the unconventional method used to extract gas from the shale — slickwater horizontal high-volume hydraulic fracturing, or hydrofracking. Concerns about how widespread use of the practice will affect the natural environment — most especially freshwaters at the local level and climate at the global level — have thrust geology into the public view in a way seldom otherwise experienced. Molecular methodologies are unavailable, and because of a fossil record consisting largely of incomplete specimens, comprehensive morphology-based phylogenetic treatments yield equivocal results. Because of axial ossicular vaulting to form the ambulacral furrow, exposure of axial and the adjacent adaxial ossicles is limited in both ancient and modern asteroids and, as a result, taxonomic focus traditionally has been extraxial. Interpretation largely separating the less varied axial adaxial elements from the more varied extraxial offers a fresh approach; here, primacy is axial-adaxial.

Evolution of the Asteroidea from the Somasteroidea accentuated two adaptive sequences: The axial or ambulacral skeleton was vaulted to form the furrow, and the adaxial virgal series was reduced to a single adambulacral ossicle. Three extinct new orders, the Euaxosida, Hadrosida, and Kermasida, are based on axial and adaxial character expressions. Extraxial evolution accompanying and following virgal-series reduction led to varied and homoplastic body configurations; extraxial development traditionally was and remains basic to taxon recognition below the ordinal level. Two familial clusters of uncertain phylogenetic linkages are recognized for each order, one centered on presence of an extraxial skeleton of small ossicles logically derived from an Ophioxenikos-grade ancestry, and a second in which extraxials became enlarged and plate-like. Aspects of Paleozoic stem group diversification were later mirrored by the Ambuloasteroidea, balancing adaptations for protection against demands of active life modes. The history of paleontological work in Virginia includes fossils from the Precambrian to Pleistocene, from protists to proboscideans. It clearly shows the evolution and the peak periods in the science over the last 400 years, and the activity of hundreds of researchers, including many of the leading American scientists of their times. This paper provides a chronological summary of this remarkable interval in the history of science. Three indexes are included that should help future students to locate the literature of Virginia paleontology. The first includes the References Cited in alphabetical order by author. The second lists all fossil references by fossil type. The third index lists all references in order of the geologic age of the studied taxa. Twenty-four text-figures demonstrate the techniques of fossil illustrations as they evolved from wood blocks to scanning electron microscopy. His initial responsibilities included mapping the richly fossiliferous Silurian and Devonian strata of western New York, but his work extended throughout North America. Hall helped to take North American geology from its infancy to a discipline comparable to contemporary geology in Western Europe. Today, he is best known as one of the earliest paleontologists to work in eastern North America. He was, however, also a pioneer in establishing stratigraphic nomenclature usage for North America, developing principles of deformation and isostasy, publishing on geosynclinal models, as well as initiating scientific inquiry on many other geologic topics. This bibliography, with notes, lists the various editions of Hall’s publications with their dates of issue, which include 1,062 publications, comprising 31,117 pages, 3,374 lithographic plates, 4,390 text figures, and 40 maps. This is the most comprehensive list of Hall publications amassed and includes monographs, journal articles, maps, abstracts, discussions of papers, records of comments at meetings, popular articles, and newspaper items. This bibliography will be of considerable use both to paleontologists needing to establish the date of publication of names of taxa described by Hall and to historians who want to reconstruct the early development of North American geology and paleontology.

Alan Stanley Horowitz, Matthew H. More than 1000 silicified bivalve specimens isolated by acid digesion of carbonate blocks yield a wealth of taphonomic, paleoecologic, paleogeographic, and taxonomic information. Petrographic analyses and scanning electron microscopy reveal specimens are preserved with silicification fabrics of quartzine-lutecite bladed masses and spherulitic chalcedony conserving fine details of original skeleton by both selective and complete replacement. Taphonomic indices indicate the fauna represents a parautochthonous stormcondensed assemblage of a shallow subtidal and relatively soft-bottom carbonate setting. Bivalves, ammonoids, conodonts, and the hydrozoan Heterastridium largely suggest a late Norian (Gnomohalorites cordilleranus ammonoid zone) age for the fauna.

Christopher A.
